Immittance Measures • Acoustic immittance refers to an acoustic energy transfer (ie. Sound waves reach the ear canal and sound pressure is applied to the eardrum)

• When enough sound pressure is exerted, the middle and inner ear systems are set into motion

• Since measurements are made at the probe tip and not the eardrum, equipment must subtract out acoustic immittance of ear canal volume in order to infer middle ear function alone

2

Admittance vs. Impedance

• Middle ear system does not fully transduce sound energy. Some is transduced or “admitted ”

• Some is reflected back or “impeded”
