Testing • Introduce yourself • Sanitize your hands • Look in patient's ear • Give instructions (or if patient has a lot of hearing loss give instructions over headphones) • Place headphones/ inserts (RED RIGHT, BLUE LEFT) • Ask patient on talk over "can you hear me?" • Begin testing

Pure Tones

• Instruct patient to respond "yes" when they hear a beep • May also have them raise hand or press button • Start at 1k Hz and 40 dB • Once a "yes" is obtained, move dial by 10 dB "up" the graph (lower in dB) • When the patient stops responding, move the dial 5 dB "down" the graph (higher in dB) until they respond again • Obtain threshold twice • Record on audiogram and move to next frequency

Bone Conduction • Typical placement of oscillator is on mastoid (behind ear) • Patient is not allowed to hold or touch the oscillator even though it is sometimes difficult to get good placement • Use same testing protocol as pure tones • Typically test 500 Hz, 1k Hz, 2k Hz, and 4k Hz
