Why is Masking Necessary? • Goal of audiogram = evaluate auditory function of each ear independently • Masking allows for true test of each ear when there is a difference between them • Masking noise is often played in the better hearing ear to get a true test of the worse hearing ear • You may have to mask both ears if bone is better than both pure tones

How does sound cross to the other ear? • The headphones/ inserts/ bone conductor can vibrate causing the patient to hear through bone conduction • Sounds escape from the transducer and are heard through air conduction
