encouraging attendance, Dr. Miyamoto said in the March 2007 Bulletin , “The conference will inform attendees about the Academy’s most recent clinical guidelines and performance measures, as well as trends in accreditation of office-based surgical facilities, preventing and responding to medical errors, and other strategies for implementing quality improvement in our practices. It is important for us to play an active role in protecting our patients and advancing the specialty, and I encourage you to attend.”
Research is the means by which new knowledge is
created and innovative new concepts validated. Today’s exciting scientific findings will ultimately improve the care we deliver to our patients.”

Clinical Practice Guidelines Richard M. Rosenfeld, MD, MPH, MBA, Chair, AAO-HNSF Guideline Development Task Force, 2006-2011, and Editor in Chief of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery 2005-2013 Seth R. Schwartz, MD, MPH, Chair, AAO-HNSF Guideline Development Task Force, 2011-2016 With external forces driving the demand for performance measures, the Academy took the lead in defining the best practices to provide improved quality patient care. In eliciting the essential support in involvement of subspecialty societies, member experts, and grassroots action, the AAO-HSNF developed and published multiple evidence-based guidelines. Otolaryngology could now boast state-of-the-art clinical practice
The AAO-HNSF guideline development process was featured in a 90-minute workshop at the 6th Annual Guideline International Network (G-I-N) Conference in Lisbon, Portugal, on November 3, 2009. The workshop, “A Quality-Driven, Pragmatic Approach to Crafting Guideline Action Statements and Evidence Profiles,” was presented by Richard M. Rosenfeld, MD, MPH, MBA, Editor in Chief of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery , and Richard N. Shiffman, MD, MCIS, co director of the Yale Center for Medical Informatics. The AAO-HNSF’s multi-disciplinary evidence-based guidelines received a lot of attention in the house of medicine, and they continued to be among the most viewed articles in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Guideline Clearing house. The dedication and rigor of all involved resulted in the AMA’s request for the AAO-HNSF to co-lead the development of the adult sinusitis measure set. In March 2007, the first Academy-sponsored measures were available through the AMA Consortium for Acute Otitis Externa (AOE) and Otitis Media with Effusion (AOE). “Only through proactive Academy efforts
guidelines on the following topics: • September 2007: Adult Sinusitis • November 2008: Cerumen Impaction
• September 2009: Hoarseness (Dysphonia) • January 2011: Tonsillectomy in Children • July 2011: Polysomnography for Sleep Disordered Breathing Prior to Tonsillectomy in Children
Clinical practice guidelines are the link between comparative effectiveness research and quality healthcare. Put simply, guidelines translate best evidence into best practice. National guidelines crafted by the Academy also empower non-otolaryngologists and primary care clinicians to deliver better ear, nose, and throat care. Your Academy has rapidly emerged as an international leader in guideline development.”
