LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE
While our Academy has domestic origins, it is truly a global melting pot for our entire specialty. There’s no greater reminder than the wonderful influx of international leaders and attendees at our Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO.” – David R. Nielsen, MD, EVP/CEO, March 2010 Bulletin

Launched in 2008, the intent of the International Visiting Scholar Program was to bring rising academic stars to the United States from low-resource countries to attend the Annual Meeting and take care in short term observerships. Dr. Kennedy shared in the January 2009 Bulletin , “Through a two-pronged program focused on international outreach as well as humanitarian efforts, we are able to collaborate in a variety of ways with our colleagues around the world, working side-by-side to give patients the best otolaryngic-head and neck care.”
A strategic priority for the Academy was to leverage stakeholder relations to create and sustain a loyal and motivated membership and customer base, to identify new opportunities for success, and to help the specialty reach a higher level of performance and relevance. In International Affairs, this happened through outreach to International Corresponding Societies, Joint Meetings, and humanitarian missions and other new initiatives implemented during this timeframe. During his term as President, Dr. Denneny formed a steering committee to drive the Academy’s international outreach activities. He noted in the May 2008 Bulletin , “The Annual Meeting is a great opportunity to fulfill the Academy’s and Foundation’s goal for international outreach, worldwide collaboration, and exchange of information and education.”
In 2010, under the leadership of Gregory W. Randolph, MD, Coordinator for International Affairs, the first Global Health Symposium was held during the Annual Meeting and featured speakers from Australia, Germany, Haiti, New Zealand, Serbia, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe. “We will continue to foster and promote an exchange of information with our counterparts around the world. In addition to the invaluable exchange of education and information that is constantly flowing back and forth, it is through our globalism that members of this Academy reach out to improve the quality of life of those in need. Globalism enables us to gain diverse knowledge, but true diversity is also about tapping into the range of talent and expertise right here at home,” shared Dr. Thomas in the October 2010 Bulletin .
