2016: The BOG theme was “Bring Home the Academy.” The campaign was launched to help increase awareness of the BOG’s critical role as the grassroots arm of the AAO-HNS, highlighting the numerous resources available for state/ local/regional otolaryngology societies and their representatives to the BOG.
and to better represent the entire portfolio of education opportunities available to members. The AAO-HNSF added the following products during this timeframe:
Committees and a joint Education Committee Meeting took place at the Annual Meeting in September 2013. Responses to this needs assessment demonstrated members wanted education products that were accessible, self-paced, interactive, easily digestible, and customizable. “Otolaryngology education and the Academy/ Foundation programming continue to evolve to provide comprehensive, traditional and point-of-care, mobile, real time access to the information, skills, techniques, and processes that will advance quality and safety, and ensure that we continue to provide the best possible care to our patients,” shared Dr. Nielsen in the January 2014 Bulletin . This initiative provided leadership with the essential information needed for the next education planning cycle as well as valuable insight for longer-term planning and required information for the AAO-HNSF 2015 ACCME accreditation preparation. In addition, “this initiative served as a model for future years’ efforts to continually identify members’ gaps in practice, assess members’ education and training needs, and engage members in the ongoing initiative to influence lifelong learning and patient outcomes in a meaningful way,” shared Dr. Waguespack, in the January 2014 Bulletin . Through the effort, the following three critical needs emerged that could be address by the AAO-HNSF: 1. Need for awareness of the breadth and depth of the Foundation education offerings 2. Need for engagement to encourage utilization and participation in education activities by both members and nonmembers 3. Need to focus on the quality of education activities Education and Research: A Critical Partnership One milestone of this timeframe was the effort to extend education and knowledge resources that focused on topics critical to patient care, which specifically included CPGs. In 2015, staff and leadership from both education and research and quality met to discuss how best to partner and educate healthcare professionals on
• Comprehensive Otolaryngologic Curriculum Learning through Interactive Approach (COCLIA)—a new online format with updated study questions for residents • ENT Exam—online digital video demonstrated a thorough ENT Exam • Resident Manual of Trauma to the Face, Head, and Neck—primarily for residents and healthcare extenders, this new e-book provided a source of diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines • AcademyQ: Otolaryngology Knowledge Assessment Tool–designed as an exam preparation tool, this mobile app facilitated knowledge self-assessment • Resident Trauma Manual e-book—published by the AAO-HNS Trauma Committee • A Simulation Fair took place at the Annual Meeting sponsored by the Simulation Task Force • The Robotic Surgery Curriculum Group developed a Robotic Surgery policy statement It was in 2013 that the Boards of Directors initiated the massive undertaking of an Education Needs Assessment Initiative. This effort was implemented to determine how best to meet the education needs of members – it began with an Education Committee Survey and SWOT Analysis and included a review of past education activity participant evaluation data, a business model analysis of all current education activities and knowledge resources, and a membership wide education needs assessment survey conducted in August 2013. Results were shared with the Education
December 2015: Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery started to publish a special focused section on Patient Safety and Quality Improvement.
