LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE
I would say that the creation of the IAB has far exceeded our collective expectations. Our partnership with the global otolaryngology community has never been stronger. We are privileged to have the opportunity to share best practices, to learn from one another, and to foster even more productive collaborations” – Carol R. Bradford, MD, MS, 2020-2021 President, November 2020 Bulletin
CONNECTING THE GLOBAL OTOLARYNGOLOGY COMMUNITY Coordinators for International Affairs James E. Saunders, MD, 2013-2017 J. Pablo Stolovitzky, MD, 2017-2021 Mark E. Zafereo, Jr., MD, 2021-2025 International Advisory Board, Chair Johannes Jacobus Fagan, MBChB, FCS(SA), 2016-2018 Sady Selaimen da Costa, MD, MSc, PhD, 2019 Karl Hoermann, MD, 2020 Prof. Muaaz Tarabichi, MD, 2021 With the International Advisory Board (IAB) officially launched in 2016, this five-year timeframe from 2017 2021 clearly demonstrated the value gained across borders as a result of the AAO-HSNF’s ongoing investment of resources into connecting the global otolaryngology community. From Johannes J. Fagan, MBChB, FCS(SA), as the inaugural Chair in 2016, to each subsequent IAB Chair, working in conjunction with the Coordinators for International Affairs, Boards, Executive Vice President and CEO, and staff, the growth of Global Affairs Program was a direct result of the commitment to achieving quality patient care around the world. The first meeting of the IAB was held on September 11, 2017, in Chicago, Illinois, during the AAO-HNSF 2017 Annual Meeting & OTO Experience. It was a gathering of all 64 International Corresponding Societies (ICSs), chaired by Dr. Fagan, of South Africa, with Co-Chair Sady Selaimen da Costa, MD, MSc, PhD, of Brazil. That meeting set in motion a momentum that has achieved so much more beyond expectations in a few short years.
that is equivalent is the same amazing minds in our field bringing their expertise to the ongoing conversation of otolaryngology. That’s what the Annual Meeting is at its core—a conversation about who we are and where we’re going as a field. And those minds and those discussions are still going to be there.” The 2021 Annual Meeting is planned to be a hybrid event with both in-person programming in Los Angeles, California, and virtual components on a web-based platform. This is due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing state and federal mandates related to gatherings and travel restrictions impacting the global otolaryngology community. Regardless of how the 2021 Annual Meeting occurs and how registrants participate, it will continue to be the trusted source of cutting edge science and innovative technology with a mix of opportunities for connecting and networking. It will be critical to understand the future evolution of scientific meetings with the newfound ability to disseminate education to previously unreachable areas. How will the virtual opportunities augment existing paradigms both scientifically and economically? How can we best deliver to present and future stakeholders the education content they need as well as the opportunities for networking? Always at the forefront of innovation, the Academy is pursuing this exploration of value-based meetings and what that looks like to attendees. Dr. Bradford announced a new initiative to address this further with the creation of the Future of Meetings Task Force in the summer 2021. According to Dr. Bradford in the July 2021 Bulletin , “This task force will follow up on the Future of Education Task Force that redesigned our education offerings with great success. The new task force will deploy member and attendee surveys to determine how we should position ourselves to meet the needs of all our constituents in the future.” Please see the special section on the COVID-19 pandemic to learn more about the Annual Meeting efforts during that unprecedented time for practice and patient care.
