LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE

We accomplished a great deal because of the tireless work of your Boards of Directors, physician volunteers, and staff. I commend Dr. Randolph as an

exceptional strategic thinker and ambassador. He understood the significance to the future when he said, ‘The good physician, the optimally functioning physician, must be well as we move to our future.’ The Academy is out in front on this issue and has embarked on initiatives addressing both wellness and the future practice of otolaryngology.” -James C. Denneny III, MD, AAO-HNS/F Executive Vice President and CEO, 2017 Annual Report

neck surgery, from private practice to academic and all those in between. He noted in his May 2021 article the benefits of this new program: “Providers in every practice model (private practice, employment models, and hybrid models) all share the need to improve efficiency, improve reimbursements, and understand the multitude of mandates expected of physicians and providers and measurement tools utilized to gauge our provision of care. As we emerge from the pandemic turmoil, ALL practitioners in every practice setting can benefit from practice management guidance.” Specifically, the objectives of the Business of Medicine program were to: • Advocate for appropriate reimbursement and diminished administrative burdens • Promote awareness of existing practice management resources through collaboration with our practice administrator colleagues • Develop an active forum for collaboration on practice management support • Develop strategic models for incorporating advanced practice providers (APPs) into team based otolaryngology care

When the Board created the Future of Otolaryngology and Wellness Task Forces in 2017, they recognized that scopes of work were intertwined. To achieve wellness meant that the future practice of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery needed a reduction in burdens. The two went hand in hand. As such, the efforts on cultivating physician well being continued as a priority area for the 125 Strong Campaign. Enhancing the quality of otolaryngology care and the sustainability of the physician workforce was a focus area of the funds raised through the Wellness arm of the campaign. The goals were to: • Create and keep current a catalog of wellness and resiliency resources available for members • Develop a “Wellness Certificate Program” that provides education and training for members to increase their expertise and knowledge of wellness that can then be implemented locally and shared with colleagues • Create “AAO-HNS Wellness Ambassadors” composed of “Wellness Certificate Program” graduates and other volunteers who would help establish peer support networks and activities at the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience designed to increase wellness and track wellness offerings available

Wellness and future practice in otolaryngology are transformational issues requiring introspective review and analysis to ensure that you, our members, remain healthy, resilient, and resourceful in delivering care in this rapidly changing, complex healthcare environment. Burnout affects the whole profession. It is imperative and incumbent on the Academy to provide the tools and resources to ensure member wellness, while critically evaluating and adapting to expected changes in otolaryngology practice.” – Gavin Setzen, MD, 2017-2018 President, October 2017 Bulletin
