Special 125th Anniversary Issue – Bulletin

J. Pablo Stolovitzky, MD AAO-HNSF International Coordinator (2017-2021) I assumed the role of Coordinator two decades after the position was first created and held by the illustrious Eugene N. Myers, MD,

Mark E. Zafereo, Jr., MD AAO-HNSF International Coordinator-Elect (2020-2021) T hrough leadership of the past and current AAO-HNSF Board of Directors and Coordinators of International Affairs, the Academy’s International Affairs Program has become the preeminent global otolaryngology-head and neck surgery organization—a networking and educational resource for the entire international community. Current AAO-HNS members now enjoy a rich global network of International Corresponding Societies, while international otolaryngologists enjoy increased participation and voice in the AAO HNS through the International Advisory Board. The AAO-HNSF International Affairs Program exists to serve both our domestic and international members, and it is with tremendous energy and enthusiasm from our collective domestic and international AAO-HNS membership that we will continue to build a global network of otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons committed to excellence in patient care, education of the next generation, and collegial service to the field.

FRCS Edin (Hon). He laid the sturdy foundation for the AAO-HNSF to play an essential role in bringing together the global otolaryngology community. He passed the torch of this crucial work impacting patient care around the world to the giants who came before me in this position— K.J. Lee, MD, Gregory W. Randolph, MD, and James E. Saunders, MD. The mentorship and support of these four individuals and the hard work of the Regional Advisors during my tenure has everything to do with the success in our global outreach. But we, the appointed Coordinators and stewards of the AAO HNSF International Affairs Program, are just one small part of the story of the global connections that have been created within the specialty around the world. The common threads of achievement that are weaved into our collaborations and connectivity, such as the following, are the heartening experiences of our work that we will pass along to our next Coordinator, Mark E. Zafareo, Jr., MD. • The proud satisfaction when watching young International Visiting Scholars receive with pride their well-deserved accolade. That sense of contribution is further enhanced by connecting with them again in their home countries and hearing how their learning in the U.S. has contributed to advancing otolaryngology in their communities. • The gratitude expressed across the spectrum of leaders of the International Corresponding Societies when we collaborate with our outstanding volunteer faculty to further the education offerings at the AAO-HNSF Joint Meetings worldwide. • The enhanced knowledge and perspectives that we gain insight to when we engage with our international colleagues by visiting them in their countries—feeling their warm welcome and soaking up new cultures and traditions. • The appreciation of international faculty when we invite them to participate in the International Symposium, giving them a stage to showcase their knowledge at our Annual Meeting, the largest gathering of otolaryngologists in the world. Looking ahead, the momentum to continue to grow this globally connected otolaryngology community will be fueled by the passion and commitment weaved into the threads of the AAO-HNSF International Affairs Program.
