Reflections from AAO-HNS/F Leaders on Historical Milestones in Otolaryngology Education
Deploying a robust learning management system, OTO Logic now has nearly 1,300 education activities. Approximately 400 offer CME that count for MOC. The learning site can be searched by activity series, specialty, and career stage, and provides resources for all learners, including practicing physicians, residents, students, and allied healthcare professionals. The education activities reflect a diverse range of topics that are offered in a variety of digital formats to complement different learning styles. All of the activities are designed to deliver relevant otolaryngology education that is meaningful to your practice. • Faculty Training The AAO-HNSF physician education leaders also have been trained on how to author these novel education products. These efforts have supported the Foundation’s mission to transform our leaders from consumers of information to producers of knowledge. The goal is to employ 21st century adult learning principles to stimulate critical thinking about clinically relevant topics. Cultivating the skills and expertise of the members of all nine education committees has brought a wealth of education opportunities to our profession. The ability to add digital assets such as graphics, photographic images, audio, video, and links to references and other resources within each of the education activities has also provided enhanced learning opportunities. • Foundation Resources Professional Education & Digital Learning, is also well equipped to provide expertise as content program managers, instructional designers, and media producers to support the mission and goals of AAO-HNSF education. The Foundation’s education staff, led by Tirza Lofgreen, CHES, Director,
“When I became the education coordinator in 1989, my first goal was to expand the Home Study Course by providing the articles instead of having the participants search the library for them. That was a big success.”

“A lot of things have changed since I was Coordinator for Education in the 1990s, which only serves to remind us all that the velocity of biomedical change is accelerating every year. All of us who wish to remain current in our field, must commit ourselves to keeping up. This is an around the clock challenge.”
Jonas T. Johnson, MD Former AAO-HNSF Coordinator for Education and AAO-HNS/F Past President (2001-2004)
"The Foundation has expanded its educational outreach to include advanced practice providers and integrated the specialty societies into its educational platforms.”
Mark K. Wax, MD Former AAO-HNSF Coordinator for Education (2009-2011) and Former AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting Program Coordinator (2016-2020)
“The Foundation goal to provide the education materials that members want, when they want it, how they want it, and where they want it, is well served by FLEX.”
James C. Dennney III, MD Current AAO-HNS/F EVP/CEO and AAO-HNS/F Past President (2008)
“Despite the explosion of scientific knowledge, digitalization of learning, and recent technological advancements—medical education has remained relatively unchanged for decades. In response to these trends and thinking about the future, medical education needs to fundamentally change to meet the growing education demands of healthcare providers. The pandemic's impact on medical education and professional training has been profound, motivating educators to re-visit the current paradigm and to expedite change.”
Sonya Malekzadeh, MD Former AAO-HNSF Coordinator for Education (2012-2015)
