Ascending vs. Descending Approach

• Ascending approach gives elevated thresholds • When testing malingerers or people with functional hearing loss • Descending approach gives lower (better) thresholds • Will cue listener in as to what they are listening for

Test Instructions • Given prior to headphone or insert phone placement • Given with hearing aid(s) in place to assure best comprehension

• Instruct patient on what to listen for • Instruct patient on how to respond • Ask which is the “better ear” and start there • Find out if patient has tinnitus

Headphone Placement • Remove all earrings • Remove hearing aid(s) • Remove hats/caps • Remove glasses

• Place TDH 39 headphones over ears • RED—patient’s right ear • BLUE—patient’s left ear • Should have snug fit directly over the ear
